On 24th October, Dr Erik R. Thomas delivered a lecture entitled "Development of Mexican American English and a Model for Immigrant Dialect Formation", where he explored the existing models that explain language contact and transfer in order to then delve into the case of Mexican American English, and finally argued for the need to adapt a new explanatory model for cases, such as those of Latino Englishes,  in which there is a subordinate group that has immigrated to a country or region of a dominant group.
Dr. Erik R. Thomas is a professor of linguistics in the English Department at North Carolina State University, where he has worked since 1995. His research focuses on the phonetics of language variation. Much of his work has examined the speech of people of color in the United States, including African Americans and Mexican Americans. He has edited or authored five books, including Sociophonetics: An Introduction and Mexican American English: Substrate Influence and the Birth of an Ethnolect.
