LVTC member, Jorge L. Bueno, has just published the first ever Spanish translation of JRR Tolkien’s The Battle of Maldon together with The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth. The volume, edited by Minotauro, offers not only Tolkien’s take on The Battle of Maldon, with his notes and commentary, but also the dramatic dialogue he composed in alliterative verse as The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, with a deep critical apparatus by the editor of the English version, Peter Grybauskas, who also includes his own piece on the links between these philological and poetical works and Tolkien’s legendarium. La Batalla de Maldon junto con El Regreso de Beorhtnoth also contains several appendixes with philological materials on Old English verse, alliteration, prosody and editorial history, together with an early rhymed version of the poem. The Spanish translations follow closely Tolkien’s prose and poetic style (maintaining alliteration and rhyme), and deal with every reference to give the reader a full account of the contents of the original volume in Spanish.
