On February 29 and March 1, Professor Ulrike Gut, from the University of Münster, gave an eight hour seminar on “Grammatical variation across varieties of English and the compilation of corpora for their study”.
On 25 February Dr Lise Fontaine conducted an eight hour seminar on Systemic Functional Linguistics. This seminar was prepared in collaboration with Margaret Berry. The seminar approached the notions of choice, metafunction and meaning.
On 3 December Cristina Suárez-Gómez (University of the Balearic Islands) gave a talk at the Faculty of Philology and Translation entitled “Structural creativity in multilingual countries." In her presentation she examined structural creativity in World Englishes, i.e. varieties of English which have emerged in multilingual countries.
During the 27th International Conference of the Spanish Society for Medieval English Language and Literature (SELIM), hosted by the University of Granada, it was announced that LVTC will organise the 28th International Conference of the Society in Vigo, on 15-17 September 2016.
From 22-23 September 2015, the LVTC team hosted a seminar on Data Analysis and Statistics with the open-source software tool ‘R’. The seminar was held by David Lorenz, lecturer and postdoc researcher at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Germany), and David Tizón-Couto, lecturer and postdoc researcher for the LVTC team.
During the 27th International Conference of the Spanish Society for Medieval English Language and Literature (SELIM), hosted by the University of Granada in 17-19 September 2015, it was announced that Jorge Luis Bueno Alonso, founding member of LVTC, will be the new editor of SELIM: Journal of the Spanish Society for Mediaeval English Language and Literature.
On 11 and 12 May 2015 Professors Alexander Bergs, from the University of Osnabrück, and Thomas Hoffmann (Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt) gave a 12-hour seminar on Language Variation and Change in Construction Grammar.
One of our research projects (ViEW: Morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes and compilation of resources for its study (the Gibraltar component of the International Corpus of English, ICE-GBR)) has received funding from the National Programme for Excellence in Scientific and Technical Research (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, grant FFI2014-53930-P).
At a recent meeting, the Press Syndicate of Cambridge University Press formally confirmed the appointment of our colleague Elena Seoane as Review Editor of the journal English Language and Linguistics (ELL), for a four-year term.
Entitled Grammar, Rhetoric and Usage in English. Preposition Placement 1500-1900, this book investigates preposition placement in the early and late Modern English periods (1500–1900), with a special focus on preposition stranding (The house which I live in) in opposition to pied piping (The house in which I live).
On 18 November Dr Jukka Tyrkkö delivered the seminar Corpora, XML and TEI at the Faculty of Philology and Translation of the University of Vigo. Dr Tyrkkö is a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Social Research at the University of Tampere.
The English Linguistics Circle (ELC) network has received funding under grant no. FFI2014-51873-REDT from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, within the programme of Thematic Networks of Excellence (‘Redes Temáticas de Excelencia’).
