Mar Nieves Fernández holds a BA in Foreign Languages (2020) and a MA in Advanced English Studies with specialisation in English Linguistics (2021), both from the Universidade de Vigo.
In her BA thesis, entitled 'A Look into Thomas Sheridan's and John Walker's Attitudes towards Mispronunciation in Eighteenth-Century Dictionaries', she examined pronouncing dictionaries from the 18th century in order to draw conclusions on the treatment of regional and social variation according to Sheridan and Walker, two of the most salient orthoepists at the time. Her MA dissertation, 'An Orthoepical Analysis of the Velar Nasal in Thomas Spence's The Grand Repository of English Language', was conceived as a follow up to her previous work, this time with a focus on phonology.
In her PhD dissertation, she is conducting research on the historical and phonological development of the velar nasal in the second half of the 18th century, with a focus on the aforementioned Grand Repository, under the supervision of Prof. Nuria Yáñez Bouza and Prof. Esperanza Rama Martínez, both from the Universidade de Vigo.
